My daughter will be a freshman at UAF this year. We (she and I) are discussing Christmas break. Should she stay on campus or fly home? We live in Wasington State.

Comment by Damien Snook on March 11, 2013 at 1:26pm Shannon: Unfortunately, campus is far enough from other areas of Fairbanks that hotels are not within walking distance. There are a few lodging options in town that have airport shuttles, and might also be able to shuttle to campus (be sure to call to inquire before booking, though): Pike's Waterfront Lodge, Spring Hill Suites, Sophie Station, Extended Stay, and Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge. At the very least, there is a city bus service that runs near those hotels, as well as multiple taxi services. Let me know if your son has any trouble planning his stay - either reply here, or shoot me an email at dtsnook@alaska.edu

Comment by Damien Snook on November 29, 2012 at 4:31pm Great to hear, David. I hope everything is going well out east!
Comment by David Gordon on November 27, 2012 at 3:27pm Damien, just wanted you all to know that Shawn is doing fine. He is taking core classes at Blue Ridge Community College and is planning to attend William and Mary in 2013 if all goes well. Still interested in fisheries and marine biology. Will keep you posted.

For the most part, the difference between Windows and Apple is a personal preference for students. All basic applications (such as Microsoft Office) work on either and files are interchangeable, which is the main concern. The only disclaimer I would make to this is specific majors might have more specific needs for certain programs (for instance, video editing is often done on Macs; many engineering applications are Windows-based). However, in these cases there are usually computer labs available for students so they don't need to purchase the programs.
So the bottom line is personal preference! If your student is fairly set in their choice of major, he/she can contact the department or ask his/her academic advisor to double check those special cases.
Comment by Gerald Nardone on June 7, 2012 at 5:13am Does anyone have a recommendation as far as Laptops for the incoming freshman, Windows vs. Apple? Do they need a printer for the dorm room or are there remote printers that can be used when needed
Thank you
Comment by Damien Snook on May 8, 2012 at 11:59am David, great to hear that your son's year went well here. Good luck to him at Old Dominion!
Comment by David Gordon on May 5, 2012 at 3:56am We want to thank UAF, its staff and instructors for having Shawn as a student. His grades are excellent. He has very much enjoyed the area, people and the friends that me made. He will further his education at ODU in Virginia. But don't worry, I have a feeling we'll be back. Thanks to all and take care. The Gordon family from Virginia.
Comment by Damien Snook on February 21, 2012 at 4:57pm If you haven't already, take a look at the February newsletter and read the Summer Sessions story. All students pay in-state tuition for summer classes, and if a student takes 10 credits, they can receive free tuition for up to four additional credits. This can save a good deal of money if your student chooses to stay in Fairbanks for the summer!
